Our primary goal is to create tree hives and take care of them. Tree hives are the natural habitat of the Augustowska bee race from Central Europe. In addition, we monitor and take care of wild swarms living in the wilderness and promote tree beekeeping and its ancient traditions.
We believe that bees and their hives were brought down to ground level for man’s convenience. Tree beekeeping gives them the opportunity to return to where they feel best – just below the tree tops.
We actively promote our national tree beekeeping heritage through historical reconstruction and conservation of the legacy left behind by 15th-century beekeepers. We teach interested parties beekeeping methods, the purpose of modern tools and technology such as a rope-and-bench tree-climbing implement (typically used by tree beekeepers), as well as tree hive building techniques with traditional tools.
We guide organised groups through the Augustow Primeval Forest, where it’s possible to see settled tree hives with your own eyes and taste a bit of honey straight from the heart of old trees.
Currently, we have 24 tree hives in our care in the Augustow Primeval Forest, situated near the town of Augustow and villages of Głeboki Brod and Plaska.
Our very first hives were established in 2013, and we’re happy to say that all of them have been naturally populated by wild bees. This success has convinced us of the virtue and usefulness of our work. In 2014, we secured the last historical log hive in the Augustow Primeval Forest, and are now waiting for sufficient funding, so that our fraternity can renovate it and put it back in place, to service wild bees in the future.
We work together with people engaged in tree beekeeping in Belarus, and actively exchange tree beekeeping experiences and good practices, as well as keep ancient tree beekeeping traditions alive.
We also take our work outside the forest, and visit primary and secondary schools to host and conduct forest beekeeping workshops for students.
Twice a year, we organise tree beekeeping courses in April and October.
